Default Replacing my Valve Cover

Hi all,

I have a 1999 Chevrolet Tracker - two bolts broke which hold the coils in place. I was able to find a new valve cover to replace from an auto wrecker near which is for a 2003 chevrolet tracker - I wanted to confirm that the 99 chevy tracker and 03 chevy tracker valve covers are compatible?

The wrecker says yes, but my friend has a 03 chevy tracker and looks like the PCV valve is different style and placement, and therefore the valve cover would be different?

Thanks for your reply! Also any quick tips anyone has on replacing valve covers would be helpful!

Cheers!

Jeremy

In 1999 the two engine options were the 1.6L and the 2.0L. In 2003 the two engine options were the 2.0L and the 2.5L (V6). Are you sure you are comparing apples to apples? Also, any chance a machine shop could remove the two broken bolts?

Hi L84sky,

Thanks for the reply! My car is the 2.0L version of the 1999 Chev tracker and the valve cover from the wrecker is the 2.0L version of the 2003 chev tracker - so is the 99 2.0 and the 03 2.0L compatible then?

I did bring it into a mechanic, though just the one, and they said from their past experience when they try to remove the broken bolts, often the bolts and where they screw into is too corroded and worn that the bolt will just continue to break and extracting may cause extra damage. In their opinion the best bet is just to replace the valve cover and the gasket at the same time. What do you think?

I personally hate removing broken bolts, like my nemesis so I thought i'd save myself the hassle and bring it in.

I've found a new valve cover for 70 dollars (35 for the cover and 35 for shipping) as well as rock auto as the gasket for 20 bucks so 100 dollar job.

According to GM Parts Super Store Chevrolet Tracker Years | GM Parts Online

The '99 and '03 valve covers are the same part number.

I’m about to cringe after reading this post. I paid $589 to have my valve cover gasket replaced. Did I get ripped off? 😕
I proudly own a 2003 Chevy Tracker, LT, 2.5 L

The 2.5L has two valve cover gaskets. Did you get both replaced?

The gaskets came in a set. So the garage stated they replaced both of them. I’m guessing that’s the same, correct? Please and thank you. I feel absolutely stupid now.😟

Removing the valve covers on the V6 is much more involved (and therefore more expensive) than the 4-cylinder engine.
