Does anyone out there know what lamps are 'monitored' for burn out by the on board computers? I assume they are only the exterior lamps (brake/turn/tailight/park etc). Is there a definitive source I can go to for this info? Thx. ('08 Uplander)

There are no dummy lights that tell you a bulb is burnt out. You need to do a walkraround

Thanks Shawn. I am new to this forum. You seem to be a GM tech type so would assume you have access to factory info that the customer would not have.

The owners manual for my 2008 Uplander suggests there is a mechanism to detect burn out lamps (other than a walk around). Also I had a 2002 Cavalier that soon after buying a 'service soon' light came on which ultimately was determined by the dealer to be a burned out DRL. So at least on some GM vehicles there is a monitoring system.

I am looking to upgrading some exterior lamps (brake/turn/running) on my 2006 Silverado and 2008 Uplander to LED type lamps. The LED vendor sites I have been checking suggest that on some vehicle makes there are systems to monitor burned out lamps. All info is vague and general, little specifics.

Any further info you can provide would be most helpfull and appreciated. Thx. Tony G.

To my knowledge, there are no ways of telling if a bulb is burnt out aside from turn signals clicking fast, and physically seeing the light not working in any uplander\montana. LED's should not be a problem going into the van

Thx Shawn. Interestingly the owners manual for my 2006 Silverado makes no mention of an on board diagnostic for burned out lamps but the 2008 Uplander manual does have some verbage about the turn signals only. I guess the only way to be sure is to replace a few bulbs with LED type and see what happens.

My '06 shows bulbs burnt out on the DIC (equipped with the enhanced DIC)

However, the system only a) shows the information once, and b) only works occasionally anyways.

On your '06, does the DIC indicate which bulb is burned out (turn or stop etc)?

It's been a while since I've seen it tell me a bulb is out; but if I recall correctly, it does tell you the position of the bulb, ie right front turn signal etc
