Exclamation Heating up

I have a 1999 venture LS. Sometime when we are going slow or sitting idle It heats up the temp Gage only go's to halfway but The van has a smell of burning coolant and very seldom smoke's or steams or something from under the hood more towards the i guess its the head or block part of the engine. Can anyone tell me what this is it doesn't smoke every time but like a couple times a week.but i smell the smell a lot.it does it at night while its cool as well could this be my fans in front not working?? even thought it does it at night when its cool?? Also sometime when we go up a steep hill or mountain the tranny will make a popping sound or a jearking sound some times but when we stop and turning the van off for 2-5 mins i like it resets and does fine any help would be great on these items thank you very much.

Are you adding coolant? 3.4 engines are prone to intake gasket leaks, Ive replaced a bunch.

High level. If your lower manifold gasket is leaking into the oil pan, it will show as a high level, and if it is, you need to take care of that quick.
