The City of Flint Gives Big Tax Break to GM, Hopes for Volt Plant
The city of Flint, Michigan was once a thriving car manufacturing town, building all sorts of General Motors vehicles, but as the market began to slump and production was moved to other places around the US and other countries, the city of Flint was heavily impacted. This downward spiral of Flint’s was the focus of controversial filmmaker Michael Moore’s 1989 piece titled Roger and Me. GM was criticized for the way things were handling in Flint and around the country, but with recent tax breaks passed by Flint authorities, there is a good chance that an exciting new model will be making Flint its birthplace.
The Chevrolet Volt, which is intended to be the first mass-produced plug-in hybrid offered by General Motors has been eagerly anticipated since debuting in concept form, and as the 2010 model year slowly approaches, Chevy has been teasing the public with sneak-peaks but little has been made official. This tax break could be exactly what GM was hoping for in order to get the Volt and the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze built in this community which has gone through some tough times due to the fall of the industry, but with such a promising vehicle being built there, this could prove to be a big step in the recovery of Flint, Michigan, with the plant likely offering around 300 jobs for the area.
