Chevrolet Forum Looks Back on 2017

Chevy steals the show in Baby Driver, 2019 Silverado spied in the wild, and we debut our list of the ‘10 Best Chevy Trucks of All Time.’

Looking back at 2017, Chevrolet Forum had a tough time compiling just 10 memorable moments. The year involved a little bit of everything — from classic cars to unexpected reveals and exclusive test drives, we had a lot to choose from. However, after a few spiked eggnogs, we were able to narrow it down to our top 10 favorite posts…

#1 2019 Chevy Silverado Spy Shots Reveal New Details!

2019 Chevrolet Silverado spy shots

These shots of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado prototype were especially revealing, due to an unforeseen vehicular wardrobe malfunction that gave us a peek at the headlights. The heavy camouflage usually deployed by automakers had slipped off while being photographed outside the GM testing facility. This gave us a first peek at the new truck’s uncovered headlights and bottom LED strip.

We were able to see the new angular headlight design, and the thin strip up top for three additional individual lighting elements. We also got to see updated front bumper design. Without the camouflage we got to see the lower portion of the body. Of the reveal, writer Brett Foote said “It’s clear that Chevrolet isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel with the 2019 Silverado. But the changes we’ve seen so far indicate that we should expect some nice modern updates on a proven formula.”

#2 Chevy Bolt Crashed On Its Own, Says Owner

Earlier this year, a Chevy Bolt owner went onto an enthusiast forum and documented a strange and alarming story about how his car suddenly went into reverse by itself and crashed in his garage.

“BOTH keys were out of the vehicle; car [was] self-locked and shut down in park from the previous night,” he posted. “Wife heard a crash, goes to the garage and sees that the car backed up and ran into a workbench, pushing in a wall.”

The owner even documented how he shut off and left the car: “I did not press the [parking brake]…I did this:

1. Hold the brake pedal down.
2. Press the button on top of the shift lever to shift into park.
3. The P indicator turned red when the vehicle went into park.
4. Turn the vehicle off.
5. Exited vehicle, and the vehicle’s horn sounded and the doors locked.”

There was damage to the Chevy Bolt and the garage. After contacting his dealership and GM, the Bolt owner followed up with Chevrolet Forum to tell us that GM representatives were scheduled to come to his home and further investigate the situation.

We think that he may want to call Ghostbusters, too!

#3 Chevrolet Forum Review: 2017 Silverado 1500 LTZ 4×4

2017 Chevy Silverado

In early 2017, Chevrolet Forum was invited to test-drive the 2017 Silverado 1500 LTZ crew cab 4×4, and, of course, we loved it!

“Aside from the big engine and big towing capacity, it’s the small details that make the Silverado the perfect work and pleasure truck,” said writer Jerry Perez. It was love at first sight of the handsome truck. But the Silverado delivered on performance, too.

“After driving the Silverado on city roads, highways, and on dry and wet weather, one thing that stood out the most was its relaxed and refined driving experience,” added Perez. “The 8-speed automatic transmission that accompanies the upgraded 6.2-liter V8 engine is an absolute dream. More often than not we couldn’t notice the shifts taking place, and the transmission was responsive and smooth under acceleration and braking. Step on the throttle with a vengeance, and all 420-ponies come out to play in a hurry, quickly triggering the traction control light to light up.”

Chevrolet Forum‘s review revealed that the Silverado just keeps on improving and remains a solid performer.

“The Silverado proved to be an excellent choice for driving the family around town comfortably, as well as the workhorse necessary for weekend trailering or work duties,” said the reviewer. “After driving the Silverado on city roads, highways, and on dry and wet weather, one thing that stood out the most was its relaxed and refined driving experience.”

#4 Chevy K10: The Return of a ’70s Supermodel

1976 Chevy K10

This auction-bound, modded 1976 Chevy K10 was a head-turning tough truck that combined the best of old and new Chevrolet parts. Replacing the stock 350 with a big block 396 gave this truck a major attitude adjustment. The ’76 badass was all about the performance, and made us wonder why this tough and solid truck isn’t in higher demand.

#5 2017 Camaro Takes on Deeper Meaning for One Fan

2017 Camaro

Chevrolet Forum spoke with Chanelle Arguello about the very special meaning of her 2017 Camaro 1LT Coupe. This was more than a sweet Camaro, this car had a deep personal meaning for Arguello, as her late father had owned and loved Camaros. Said Arguello, “He spoke about them in such an incredible way that in the back of my mind, it was as if I had to have one, one day.” When she was ready to buy one, she knew she’d buy a black car, just like her dad liked. Arguello nicely captured the power a car can imprint on you, “Every time I get in my car and start to drive, I think to myself, ‘let’s cruise, dad,’ and start to ride, knowing we are together. My dad said the car made you feel alive, and now I understand what he used to describe.”

#6 GM Recalls Chevy and GMC Pickups to Fix Steering Issue

GMC recall

In August, General Motors recalled about 700,000 Chevy Silverados and GMC Sierra pickups due to a power steering problem. The recalls involved 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models produced between January 29, 2013 and September 4, 2014. The recalled vehicles, equipped with a potentially faulty electric power steering assist (EPS), had a software issue that could cause a driver a temporary loss of steering assistance. GM had previously investigated the issue last February. After the investigation concluded, they issued the recall.

#7 Baby Driver‘s Badass Scene Stealer: The Chevy Avalanche

Baby Driver chase

We were loving “Baby Driver” when it hit theaters. It had a kickass soundtrack, amazing driving stunts, and lots of wild chase sequences. One in particular involved a GMT900-chassis Chevrolet Avalanche. Without spoiling anything, the full-sized Chevy truck is trying to escape post-heist. The bank’s security follows in old Dodge Ram, and the Chevy ends up riding sideways underneath a tractor trailer on the highway at crazy speeds. Don’t try this at home, kids!

#8 Chevrolet Forum Review: 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali

GMC 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali

Chevrolet Forum reviewed the 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali back in March, with writer Tim Esterdahl heading out to the Utah/Colorado border to out it it to the test. The truck impressed in power, and the 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 delivered nicely, especially in improvements on torque, horsepower, emissions and engine noise. Said Esterdahl, “Thanks to the engine-noise drop, triple-sealed doors and other sound-deadening improvements, it is actually difficult to tell the truck is idling.”

#9 Hot Wheels: Chevrolet Forum Names Chevy’s Best Trucks

All-Time Chevy Trucks

We got the comment sections and forums talking with our list of the “10 Best Chevy Trucks of All Time.” Among the diverse list of iconic Chevy trucks was the 1947 Chevy 3100 Series, Chevy Apache NAPCO, 1973 Chevy Suburban, 1973 C30 One-Ton Dually, and the Chevy TrailBlazer SS. Naturally, some readers felt we had omitted some important trucks, but it led to a spirited discussion and a chance to look at some sweet rides.

#10 Video: Chevy Silverado’s Hill Descent Control System at Work

Hill Descent Control System

This video highlighted the Hill Descent Control System. Said writer Jerry Perez, “The system works by employing the use of ABS and wheel speed sensors found in each wheel. Once the computer analyzes what the truck’s incline and pitch angles are, it’ll manage each wheel’s slip control separate from the rest. The driver is able to set the descend speed via the steering wheel-mounted buttons up to a maximum of 3 mph or so. This features comes in extra handy when dealing with slippery or rocky hills.” Jerry Perez put the system to work, with interesting and informative results.
