Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 models between 2014 and 2018 model years recalled over aging power-assist braking systems.

For the most part, our hard-working, hard-playing Chevy trucks and SUVs are built “like a rock,” taking on all challenges with no complaints. Such enduring quality means you’ll be able to pass your Chevy down through your family for decades to come.

Sometimes, though, there can be some issues with our Chevy of choice which merit a recall by the company. According to CNBC, such a recall was issued by General Motors September 11, affecting 3.4 million Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac trucks and SUVs.

The new recall involves the power-assist braking system in 2014 through 2018 Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 models, plus the Suburban and Tahoe for model years 2015 through 2018. Specifically, the pump on the system ” can put out less vacuum power than needed, increasing stopping distance and the risk of a crash,” per GM.

The cause of the pump’s decreased vacuum is the filter screen, per GM spokesperson Dan Flores. The pump uses engine oil to function properly, while its screen keeps impurities out. Over time, however, the screen could become clogged, reducing the flow of oil to the pump, and thus, reducing the vacuum needed for braking.

Flores added that the braking issue, which occurs rarely and only at low speeds, doesn’t impact everyday driving, and that the braking system should “continue to function and exceed the requirements of the appropriate federal motor vehicle safety standard.” Plus, should a problem with the primary system occur, the secondary system will be able to take over, though at a lower speed.

Affected owners were notified of the problem September 6, with instructions to take their vehicles to the nearest dealer for a recalibration of the electronic brake module at no charge. The recalibration enables the secondary system to operate faster than before, improving performance “in any situation where brake vacuum drops,” per Flores.

As for the pumps themselves, Flores said those won’t be replaced, as such failures are already covered under extended warranties, and are a rare occurrence.

The recall also affects 2014 through 2018 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 models, the 2015 through 2018 GMC Yukon, and the 2015 through 2017 Cadillac Escalade.
