Final sixth generation Camaro will roll off the assembly line in January 2024. There are no immediate plans for a seventh generation.

In 1966 the first ever Camaro went on sale for the 1967 model year. Production continued until 2002 when the fourth generation Camaro left the market. It returned in 2010 with the fifth generation. The sixth generation began in 2016 and is set to end in 2024. And like the end of the fourth generation, there are no immediate plans for a follow-up. Chevrolet has recently announced that the Chevrolet Camaro will retire at the conclusion of model year 2024. The final sixth generation Camaros will come off the assembly line at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan in January 2024.

There is at least a little bit of good news in all this. Chevrolet will offer a Collector’s Edition package on the 2024 Camaro RS and SS, and on a limited number of ZL1 equipped vehicles available in North America. More information on this special edition will be available closer to the summer when order books open. What we do know is that this special edition will pay homage to the first generation Camaro. There will also be some sort of tie-in to the programs initial code name: Panther.

Camaro Not Finished

When the last sixth generation Camaro rolls off the line, we know that will be it for a while. But Chevy is also telling us to be patient because there will be another Camaro at some point.

“As we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee and race fan,” said Scott Bell, vice president, Global Chevrolet. “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.”

Chevrolet Performance

The Chevy brand has always had ties to high performance. We may be losing the Camaro for now, but we will still have vehicles like the Corvette, Colorado ZR2, Silverado ZR2, and the Tahoe RST. The Blazer EV SS is a new breed of performance vehicle that is expected to arrive this fall. Chevrolet is also no stranger to motorsports. The sixth generation Camaro competes in NASCAR, IMSA, and a variety of other race series.

Even with the Camaro going away, racing will not. “Chevrolet’s products and our relationship with our customers benefit from motorsports,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. vice president, Performance and Motorsports. “Our plan is to continue to compete and win at the highest levels of auto racing.”

Seventh Generation Camaro

The good news is we are being told there will be a seventh generation Camaro. The bad news is we don’t know when that will be or what the new Camaro will be like. With the way things look right now it is highly doubtful that a new generation Camaro will be powered solely by a gasoline-powered V8 engine. Any seventh generation Camaro will likely be a hybrid or full electric vehicle. We have no doubt that Chevy will make the car an impressive performer. But there is no question that it will not be like any other Camaro we have seen over the past 56 years.
