Electric Chevrolet Silverado Will Be ‘Unmatched’ per GM CEO Mary Barra
Details are scarce at the moment, but the electric Chevrolet Silverado will debut at CES on January 5, 2022.
The electric vehicle revolution is here and picking up steam. And EVs are not limited to small commuter cars or high-performance sports cars. Soon even full-size trucks will be electrified. This includes of course the much-loved Silverado. Many electric trucks have already been debuted such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T. Both of these trucks seem to offer some impressive capabilities and technology. And customer interest has been strong. However, as reported by CNBC, GM CEO Mary Barra recently said that the electric Chevrolet Silverado will be “unmatched.” That is a bold statement for the late to the party Silverado.
“I think when you see the timing that the Silverado will be available, and what that vehicle offers, I think is unmatched,” Barra said Thursday during an Automotive Press Association meeting in Detroit. “I think that’s going to make a big difference.” We certainly hope that is all true and we should not have to wait too much longer to find out. GM will unveil the Chevrolet Silverado E at the CES technology conference on January 5 in Las Vegas.
What we do know is that the electric Silverado will be based on an all-new electric truck platform named Ultium. The new Hummer EV will share this platform. The Ford F-150 Lightning is based on the regular F-150 platform. So, the Chevy may have some advantages. But the first of the new electric Chevy pickups will not be in customer hands until 2023 which gives the rivals a head start. However, this does not seem to phase Barra. She believes GM is the leader in EV technologies and self-driving features among major automakers.
“For an OEM of scale, we’re first. Full stop,” she said. “For start-ups that are only focused on one area, luxury segments, etc., those are obviously competitors that we treat very, very seriously, but when General Motors puts its scale, its highest loyalty in the United States across our brands, we have a lot of assets that we’re going to bring to the party.” We can’t wait to see exactly what those Chevy party tricks will be.
One of the few teaser images we have seen so far does show a huge glass roof over top the Silverado. That is cool, but it will take a lot more than that to beat its rivals. In addition to the fixed-glass roof, Chevrolet has confirmed the availability of Four-Wheel Steer. This will enable the truck to steer all four wheels. The electric Silverado is also expected to offer buyers with an estimated range of more than 400 miles on a full charge. Beyond that we are just going to have to wait until the official reveal. It is great to hear that Barra has so much confidence in the electric Silverado. It gives us hope that this truck is going to wow us when we finally get all the details. Stay tuned Chevy fans.
