Cadillac, GMC, and Chevy Trucks fall under GM’s most recent safety-related recall.

If you own a diesel-powered 2020 to 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2500, or 2500 pickup or a 2021 Suburban or Tahoe, listen up. General Motors, the parent company to Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC issued an urgent recall on November 19. However, it has nothing to do with the faulty electronic brake control software.

Instead, 461,839 diesel-equipped models have transmission control valves that can fail while driving. If they do fail, the rear wheels can spontaneously lock up. Which can obviously cause serious injury or even death to the occupants in the affected vehicle or those around them.

Thankfully, like most recalls, there isn’t much to do aside from waiting for a letter in the mail. If you’re feeling especially scared of your rear wheels locking up and causing a catastrophic crash, you can run your VIN on GM’s website here to see if your vehicle is affected.

If your vehicle does fit under the recall parameters, the first step is to call your local dealership and make an appointment, mentioning the recall. Then a certified technician will install fancy diagnostic transmission control software. For free, of course. Then if the software continues to detect a defect, GM will pay for a new transmission control valve installation.

Of course, the entire process is free of any cost to the vehicle owner.

Other affected vehicles include:

  • Cadillac Escalade: 2021
  • Cadillac Escalade ESV: 2021
  • GMC Yukon: 2021
  • GMC Yukon XL: 2021

GM will begin sending letters to owners starting December 9. Drivers can also check their VIN on the website linked above. If calling is preferred, the customer service departments of GM companies can be reached at 1(800) 458-8006 for GM, 1(800) 222-1020 for Chevy, 1(800) 462-8182 for GMC, and 1(800) 462-8782 for Cadillac.

The reference number for this recall is “N242454440.”
