In the market for a new truck? You can’t go wrong with a Sierra 3500, because these beasts really hold their value.

There’s a lot to love about the GMC Sierra. It’s always boasted a classy exterior and a more refined appearance than other pickups in the heavy-duty segment. That’s because General Motors is committed to keeping the Sierra lineup fresh and filled with exactly the type of features truck buyers want. GMC’s “Professional Grade” motto exists for a reason, after all.

J.D. Power recently evaluated three-year-old vehicles to determine which ones retained the most value after 36 months. The 2019 J.D. Power Resale Value Awards bestowed many different makes and models with trophies due to their low depreciation. But only one vehicle could be at the top. And that honors now belongs to the Sierra 3500.

The Sierra 3500 beat out every other vehicle currently on sale based on several criteria. J.D. Power looked at wholesale records from January to June of this year for model year 2016 vehicles. The company calculated resale based on an average of 2,400 used vehicle transactions per vehicle, which are then divided by the retail value of the vehicle when new.

While the Sierra 3500 took the overall resale value crown, several other vehicles from General Motors received nods for their low depreciation as well. The Chevy Tahoe took home the award for best resale value in the large SUV segment and the GMC Yukon was the runner up. The Cadillac Escalade earned second place in the large premium SUV category and the Silverado 1500 was number two in the large light duty pickup segment. The large heavy duty pickup category, which is where the Sierra 3500 competes, also hosted two other winners from General Motors: The Silverado 2500 and the GMC Sierra 2500.

Don’t expect the resale value of the Sierra HD lineup to go down anytime soon. All the major car outlets and publications recently reviewed the all-new 2020 Sierra HD and came away impressed. The Sierra’s Duramax paired with the new 10 speed Allison transmission “is an absolute monster when pulling heavy loads” said Motor Trend. If you’re in the market for a truck, might be a good idea to consider a new Sierra over a used one. You will probably pay more up front, but with so little depreciation, the truck might prove to be a better investment in the long run. “One of the biggest concerns for many new-vehicle owners is depreciation,” said Jonathan Banks, Vice President of Vehicle Valuations & Analytics at J.D. Power. With the Sierra lineup, it seems like truck buyers have a lot less to worry about compared to trucks from other brands.
