Members Shed Light on Fixing a Chevy Dome Light
Chevrolet Forum members once again come to the rescue when an unusual problem surfaces in an Express van.
Dome lights are probably one of the more unappreciated things in any vehicle. Until they quit working, that is. We pretty much take for granted the fact that we can hop in our trucks at night and be able to see where we’re headed. Or locate something we stuffed in the console. But when a dome light goes out and it isn’t just due to a bad bulb, you’ve got a real problem on your hands.
That’s exactly the predicament Chevrolet Forum member StanVan found himself in recently with his 2016 Chevy Express van. Despite the van’s tender age, it left Stan in the dark. Literally and figuratively.
“I hesitate to ask this, as I know what the first thought will be. My dome light doesn’t come on when the door opens. I know about the override switch (not my first Chevy that has this feature). It’s still under warranty, so I’m not asking for a solution. I just would like to know if this is a known thing. The switches work, as the chimes go off appropriately, and the light comes on manually. It’s quite annoying, but I’m very busy for the next few weeks. Knowing may help it be less annoying.”
The override switch that Stan is referring to is located right next to the exterior lamp control. Obviously, this little switch is nice to have, but can also cause major headaches if you don’t know about it. Oftentimes, folks activate it accidentally. And if you don’t know how the switch operates, this can be a very frustrating situation.
Knowing about the existence of it is one thing. But operating the pesky dome light override switch is another matter altogether. Thankfully, Chevrolet Forum veteran canucklehead has the answer.
“The on off part of that switch is the upper half of the bezel. The little **** only controls the dim…….the upper half flexes and is the switch.”
This is certainly useful information, to which Twscarp adds.
“Good job canucklehead, I didn’t know about the ‘push to depress the top part to turn off the dome lights, push again and the switch comes out and domes come on.’ The little **** (stalk) will also turn on the dome lights, if rotated all the way clockwise.”
This thread is just one of countless examples where members come to the rescue when help is needed. No matter what kind of Chevy you drive, chances are, any problem you might incur has already been addressed! So next time you’re facing a strange issue with your ride, head on over to the forums and you’ll likely find the answer. And if you don’t, just ask! More likely than not, several other folks have probably faced the same dilemma.
