Turn It Up: Borla Exhaust Upgrades for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS
No matter how good you think the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS sounds, Borla thinks it can make it sound better.
Its selection of mid-pipes and mufflers for the LT1-powered sixth-generation legend are designed to do just that. The 2.75-inch T-304 stainless steel mid-pipes increase airflow from the engine and are available in two forms: one with Active Fuel Management (AFM) valves and one without them. According to Borla, “These operate separately from the NPP valves in the mufflers and are designed to enhance backpressure and sound quality when the 6.2-liter LT1 engine engages its four-cylinder, low emissions mode.” The AFM mid-pipe is recommended for street-car applications; the non-AMF version is better suited to race-prepped 2016 Camaro SSs.
Borla offers two varieties of muffler: the S-Type, which is more vocal than stock and the race-bred ATAK, which the brand says delivers the highest decibel level in its street-legal portfolio. Both types are compatible with 2016 Camaro SSs with or without the four-tip Dual Mode (NPP) exhaust. You can listen to the difference they make in the following video.
Each system is covered by Borla’s Million Mile Warranty. Soon, they’ll get company. Borla is going to offer exhaust systems for turbo-I4 and V6 Camaros. It’s even going to offer long-tube headers and a three-inch header-back exhaust system, but that’ll be for “competition or race use only.”

BORLA exhaust systems provide Camaro SS owners with a variety of sound options. The patented and race-bred ATAK muffler technology, for example, delivers the highest decibel level available in the street-legal BORLA lineup. It provides the most aggressive exhaust notes that are still acceptable for residential driving.
The BORLA S-Type exhaust option also delivers enhanced performance with a throaty, aggressive sound under acceleration but at a reduced volume level.
The BORLA ATAK and S-Type rear-section mufflers can be specified with or without Dual Mode-type valve technology. This is to ensure that Camaro owners who selected the Chevrolet factory NPP option can still enjoy their Dual Mode functionality even with a BORLA exhaust fitted.
Furthermore, Camaro SS owners can add the BORLA performance mid-pipe to the rear-section mufflers. The mid-pipe is available separately and eradicates the restrictions in the stock exhaust system, improving airflow and aiding performance, without increasing the sound output.
The mid-pipe is available with or without Active Fuel Management (AFM) valves. These operate separately from the NPP valves in the mufflers and are designed to enhance backpressure and sound quality when the 6.2-liter LT1 engine engages its four-cylinder, low emissions mode. For regular street driving, it is recommended that Camaro owners specify the BORLA performance mid-pipe with AFM valves, but racing applications may prefer to delete the AFM.
Giving Camaro owners even more opportunities to customize their car, BORLA offers a Touring resonator option for its mid-pipe. This part is designed to provide a milder growl from the ATAK or S-Type rear-section for owners who have specified the performance mid-pipe. The sound remains distinctively different from stock to let people know you mean business, yet is not as sporty as ATAK or S-Type.
Whatever combination of parts are chosen, the BORLA development team designed and engineered the Camaro SS exhausts to deliver enhanced performance without any annoying drone that is generally associated with aftermarket exhausts. Yet BORLA is able to deliver more horsepower and torque when you plant your right foot. There is also the added benefit of improved fuel economy at cruising speeds.

Since it was established almost 40 years ago, BORLA has been the pioneer and leading manufacturer of aerospace-grade T-304 stainless steel performance exhausts systems. As a result, its new products for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS are lighter than stock, which provides a degree of improved vehicle handling. Through lighter weight and improved gas flow, the performance of the vehicle will be noticeably better throughout the rev range. The greater efficiency of the design, and the lighter construction also helps to improve overall fuel consumption, when driven appropriately.
The use of aerospace-grade stainless steel provides lasting durability against rust and corrosion. In fact, BORLA is so confident in the quality of its products that everything is backed by its industry leading Million Mile Warranty. For more information, visit Million Mile Warranty
