1988 Chevy Truck Commercial vs Ford F-150

Back in 1988, this Chevy truck commercial used a simple, entertaining test to prove why it was superior to the Ford F-150 of that era.

The Chevy vs Ford rivalry is one the stretches back over a century to this point, with the two cross-town rivals doing battle in essentially every automotive segment that exists over that time span. However, aside from products like sedans, crossovers, and SUVs, Chevy and Ford have engaged in a heated truck battle for decades, one that continues to this very day. In America, where pickups are a lifestyle – not just a mode of transportation – there are huge profits on the line, and that was even the case back in 1988, as this vintage Chevy truck commercial proves.

Personally, we love old commercials like this, which are far different than what we see today, as automakers weren’t afraid to show precisely what makes their vehicles superior in oftentimes humorous and entertaining ways. That’s certainly the case with this vintage Chevy truck commercial, as it focuses on one particular element of both that model and the Ford F-150 from this era – the suspension systems that fitted to each.

Out in some field, this test pits a half-ton Chevy truck against its direct F-150 rival, both equipped with four-wheel-drive and the top tire money could buy at the time. Both trucks are then driven at the same speed into a ditch that’s 18 inches wide to see which – if not both – can clear the obstacle. As our host points out, the Chevy truck has a torsion bar suspension, while the Ford is equipped with a twin traction beam setup.

As one might’ve guessed by now, the Chevy truck manages to make it over the obstacle, while the Ford, well, it’s left hanging. It’s a simple but effective demonstration of one particular advantage Bow Tie haulers had in this era, and the sort of thing that you simply don’t see today – though truthfully, we wish automakers would get back to this kind of marketing.
