93 k3500 7.4 randomly starts. No spark
As the title states, it will randomly start every other day. When it does start it runs like a champ. New cap and rotor, icm (twice to make sure) plugs and wires, temp sensor. Tested the coil just outside the dist. and it is getting juice, but no juice to plug wires. I'm beyond baffled as to why it randomly starts every other day and will continue to start that day when it does. I've researched hard and read fuel pump relay or oil pressure switch, but don't understand how that could be it. A relay is either bad or good, it doesn't fix itself. Fuel pump is coming on like normal each time if it starts or not. 200k on clock. No cel. Help would be much appreciated, Parts cannon is not the answer for me. Thanks guys.
intermittent stuff is not fun. I think you need a bit more detail to get responses. Just saying it starts sometimes and not others is too broad.
When it doesn’t start, what have you checked & how? Eg. - confirmed no spark somehow or starter fluid in TBI? Are injectors spraying when it doesn’t start?

Sabino56 No spark from distributor and no fuel to TBI when it doesn't start/crank. Fuel pump still comes on as normal. Tested pickup coil with no start and it tests good on both + and - side. Today, went out to start it and it fired soon as I hit the key. Drove 60 miles to haul a pool table with 3 hours of it being off and fired right up when I headed home. I could place bets all day that it won't start Monday, but come Tuesday it will. My buddy picked up the service manual from the library so we can go through the step by step diagnostic it gives, which is lengthy, and when we have time. It has us both dumb founded since we both wrench, him professionally. Question-I haven't tried to pull codes since there is no cel, but would codes be present? Thanks for fast reply with little info, but pretty much all I have to go on.
I’m not sure if all codes set a cel - but easy enough to check. You can do it by shorting two pins on ALDL and counting flashes if you don’t have something to read codes. https://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/s...php?tid/273660
here’s a link to shop manuals for a 93 which might help on the trouble shooting. https://www.gmt400.com/threads/88-95...manuals.43575/
I would have thought pickup coil too. It has to be good to ICM for it to work & ICM has to set a ref signal high to ECM before it will start controlling injectors and timing. I’ve read posts where people have said they found fine cracks in reluctor which caused problems but Ive no experience on that myself. You might try searching on that to see if someone’s has similar experience to yours. Good luck
