1999 silverado 4x4 question
my neighbor told me today he was going to work and all of a sudden his truck started making thumping sounds from what may be the drive line. i rode with him and to me it sounds like a cv joint is catching and releasing. it is hard to check them with the wheel on the ground for the inner. it does not make the normal clicking when truning, the boots are not broken. but it is a low lever thump that does change with speed but no with engine speed.
the drive shafts look ok at the u joints aw we tugged and twisted and did not find anything lose. however they still may be lose as i did have one fail and no mechanics i took it to years ago found it.
i told him to engage the 4x4 to see if the inter lock might be close enough to be touching and clicking/thumping now and then. it can be rythmatic and then do a double and stop and then single and double and stop. i do not have much experience with inner cv joints to know how they fail so maybe the guys here might have an idea? thanks bp.
