Default Gas gauge doesn't work properly.

My gas gauge in my 1999 chevy silverado 1500 doesnt work. For the most part it stays on empty or quarter tank but them sometimes it will spike up to the appropriate amount that it should be at. For the last few months I have been just resetting the odometer and about every 250 miles I put in $45-$50 in it. I have had it looked at and they believe either the control cluster needs to be replaced, but I have about 300k miles on it and was wondering if replacing the cluster seems to be the issue.

My 99 did that many years ago and it was the sending unit on the fuel pump assembly.

Did you buy an OEM fuel pump assembly or aftermarket?

I bought a Delco pump from the dealer. With the work involved it is not worth it to buy a cheap aftermarket pump. I would only buy Delco or Delphi pumps.

I recently decided to fix my fuel gauge, since I've had the truck it won't go over 3/4. It's not likely the dash, the ones with cluster issues are usually the 03-06's I found out after I bought stepper motors that won't fit mine (but will my son's tahoe) you pretty much are stuck changing the fuel pump.

Delco is preferred.

I’ll give it a look. I have no problem doing the work myself. I prefer to work on it myself no matter the hassle. I recently just replaced the transmission in my truck. When I get ahold of the fuel pump I’ll see if that’s what fixes it. Thank you for the help.

I've found it's easiest to just pull the whole bed off to do the fuel pump, that way you don't damage the wiring dropping the tank.

Just don't forget to unplug the tail lights too!
