I just got an oil change a week before this all happened and the picture I was sent of the dip stick and the oil sample and there is so much metal. The truck showed no signs of issues or problems.
This sounds like a driveshaft issue. Aluminum driveshafts were not welded properly. They cause a shudder, but they also cause metal shavings to go into the tranny. And the truck will need a new tranny. And a new driveshaft. Replacing to a more heavier metal driveshaft will fix the metal in your oil problem. Fixes some shudder issues. But mostly it keeps you safer. Because if it decides to ande it will separate from the vehicle you lose propulsion. Imagine being on the interstate while this happens or just taking off into traffic this could be deadly I don't have any of the sources where I got it from.. but there's a recall on them. So check into it . Metal shavings are a big sign of driveshaft issues. I'm currently on this adventure myself. Good luck

Jscott, just curious if the bulletin fix actually worked. I know it's been a while since you posted this but, have 2019 High Country Silverado with only 18K on it and a 6.2L that just did the exact thing yours did yesterday including the "neutral" statement. It's the first time it's happened so, caught me off guard completely.

Was within a mile of my house. I was at a slow speed and had just stopped and made a turn and was accelerating. It just died...no sputters, just shut the engine down. It said put in neutral and restart so, I was able to coast to a side road, put in Neutral and it restarted. I pulled forward a little bit and it died again, exact same way. It said, put in Park and restart. This time, the starter whirred away but, the truck engine wouldn't fire off. All gauges good, no check engine or other warnings. So, I called a tow truck (ticked off I might add). After the truck sat for ~20 Minutes with the flashers on waiting, I decided to try to start it again and it actually fired so, I pulled it into a driveway and waited for the tow truck. When he got there, we fired it up again and loaded on the roll back to take to my mechanic.

The fuel was at 1/4 tank so close to where the alert usually goes off but, no warnings of any type.

Was curious to know if you solved yours as I start the process of stump the dummy to isolate the issue (whether fuel, electrical or ?).

Thanks in advance!

Thank ya sir. I'll add that to the checklist for sure! If I sort out the answer, I'll make sure to pass it along. Of course the issue doesn't repeat for my trusted repair shop.

I will definitely share with the group. The truck is in pristine condition so, a little baffled.

Much appreciated.

Did you all find resolutions? I had the same thing or similar happen to me tonight. Punched it to pass a farm vehicle on a passing lane and the engine shut off (electronics still on) and said to shift to neutral and restart. Tried to restart and it wouldn’t so coasted to a parking lot and put in park. Wouldn’t even crank for me, and check engine light came on. Towed to dealer tonight. 46,000 miles, bought pre-owned at 7,000 miles and got a 75,000 mile warranty for it thankfully.

Have serviced it with a dealer every service, including 4 days ago. Filled it up an hour before from Sam’s Club, hopefully not bad gas.

Mine ended up being a fuel module near the pump which lost signal somehow. All I know is that when it was replaced the problem went away. It did not throw a real code so it was a guess but, seemed to work.

Heard back from the dealer, catastrophic engine failure. Currently there aren’t any 6.2Ls in the system to even place an order with GM. Dealer is checking daily until there is. Under warranty, fully covered by GM.
