Default Error Codes

Hi Forum

Got a Astro 1995 model... and keep getting the following error codes; 32, 38, 83 - and according to the Haynes Repair manual:

32 = EGR Vacuum switch shorted to ground on startup, switch not closed after the PCM has commanded the EGR for a specified period of time or the EGR solenoid circuit is open for a specified period of time. Replace the EGR valve*

*Component replacement may not cure the problem in all cases. For this reason, you may want to seek professioneal advice before purchasing replacement parts.

Regarding the last 2 error codes 38+83 the Haynes book says: There are additional trouble codes that relate only to models equipped with the 4L60E electronic controlled automatic transmission. They are as follows; 37,38,39,58, thru 87, if these codes are displayed take your vehicle to a qulified transmission repair shop!! Damn ...it sounds expensive....

Does anyone knows what 38 and 83 could be?

And how much does a new EGR valve cost?

thx for any feedback

Default RE: Error Codes

38 is your brake switch. Test for proper operation of the brake switch
83 is your tcc solenoid switch malfunction

Hi shawnvw

thx for your reply...

Are the tcc (torque converter clutch)located on the transmission and also called "speed sensor"?

Let's start with having you remove and clean out the carbon out of the EGR valve and adding a screened gasket from a help section of a auto parts store. Then clear the codes and see what you have. After you have done that, let us know what you have found.
Hi 1Gary
thx for your reply

I'm planning to cleanthe EGR valve (hopefully I don't need to replace it) but I don't quite understand this: .. "...and adding a screened gasket from a help section of a auto parts store"

The tcc switch is different from the speed sensor. I would advise you to take it to a tranny shop to have it looked into

Hi Guys

I replaced the VSS (on the transmission) and it then returned the same error codes...bummer... :0(

So got a test unit on it today...and went for a drive... :0)

Beside the EGR carbon issue that still remains...... It turns out that the brake switch are stuck in off mode (or the other way around; stuck in on mode - so the overdrive won't/can't engage..)...there's apparantly a relay above the brake pedal arm - so I need to replace this asap....should be this one...click here for a view (can it really be this one giving the TCC bracke switch error? - if yes ....should't the brake light then be on at all times- i mean if it's stuck? )

Everything else turned out fine on the test unit..;0)

thx for your feedback... :0)

Hi

sorry for not returning sooner

Now I have cleaned the EGR valve ...but the car is running much poorly now.. It still gives me all the same error codes...and it uses a lot more gasoline now, than before the cleaning...

It now makes a significant "jump" from 1 to 2 gear.

I'm thinking that I just should disable the EGR valve...?

Hi 1Gary

hmmm...I havn't tampered with anythingelse other than theEGR valve...
(unmountedthe wire on theAir filter tube and then the tube itself...unmounted theEGR valve... cleaned it... mounted the new gasket and the EGR valve and then mounted the Air tube and the wire....maybe I need to tighten it further...I'll have a look at it...
