I have a 90 lumina 3.1 and the volt light comes on when i accelerate and the service engine light will also come on some time after that. I checked the voltage on the altenator it runs about 17volts around the time when this happens, is this a normal voltage range for the altenator or does this mean my voltage regulator is bad. Thanks in advance for any input on this subject.

 

17 volts is way too high.......I have seen an overcharging alternator burn our both headlights in a vehicle. can't imagine what it did to the ecm.

sounds like you need an alternator
