Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it. I'll order some shear bolts up and maybe try and take pictures to help others. Suspect with age, other owners will have the same issue.

Well, after replacing the entire fuse block, Engine Control Unit and Body Control module due to [seemingly] unrelated issues, we could never recreate that burning stinky smell again, even after idling the car for 30 minutes. We can only assume that one (or more) of the above-mentioned peripherals caused overheating of the solenoid. That's about as much closure I can provide. Cheers.
