My 2003 cavalier goes into gears but will not go into park can anyone suggest what it could be.

 

Years ago I made the mistake of trailering a car in park. The result of that movement sheared the pin that locks the trans up so it doesn't move. Moving while placing a car in park can do the same. Best case is looseness or out of adjustment shift cable, Or a loose/missing bushing at the cable ends? Does the shifter feel the same as before? If park is gone does it really go into the opposite end of the throw to low? After this it may get bad. My .02
