Default Stereo Wire Colors & Grounding

I have a few questions about wiring my after market stereo for my 93 cavalier. The original owner cut off the original harness and wired the current radio by splicing the wires and taping them. So to make my job harder I have to do this as well.

Question 1- There are 2 yellow wires 1 is for is for ignition switch one is for a speaker (don’t know which at the moment) is there anyway to tell the difference

Question 2- what is the proper way to ground the stereo?

this is the color guide i have from eliterides.com

GENERAL MOTORS

Memory (+12v Constant) Orange
Ignition (+12v Switched) Yellow
Ground (-) Black
Illumination Gray
Dimmer Brown
Power Antenna Pink
Left Front Speaker (+) Tan
Left Front Speaker (-) Gray
Right Front Speaker (+) Light Green
Right Front Speaker (-) Dark Green
Left Rear Speaker (+) Brown
Left Rear Speaker (-) Yellow
Right Rear Speaker (+) Dark Blue
Right Rear Speaker (-) Light Blue

Default RE: Stereo Wire Colors & Grounding

to tell the difference between the yellows
use a volt meter and turn the key on and see which one has 12 volts
the speaker on will not
and as for the ground just use the black one
also i wouldnt try to stay away from electrical tape if you can
try to solder and shrink wrap the splices
its a better way to fix it

good luck
