my engine fan is running all the time
Hello,
My car is a 2012 certified pre-owned chevy cruze with 36k miles.
I seem to be experiencing a problem similar to what many on here have been describing. After my car runs for a couple minutes the engine fan turns on extremely loud and remains on until the car is turned off. The check engine light was coming on and off before and is now staying on all of the time.
I brought my car to auto zone and the two codes they gave me were P0597 and P0598, one of which was a code that seemed to have been reset.
There was also a point when I was pulling up to stop at a light and the dashboard messages began saying that ABS, the power steering, and traction control needed to be inspected before the car seemed to lose all power. I turned the car off and it would not attempt to turn-over for nearly a minute before starting back up and seeming to be fine.
I have contacted the dealership near me for assistance but have not heard back since leaving a voice-mail.

My wife wanted the 2012 Cruze so we got it for her. Not my favorite car (I'm a Ford man) but it made her happy! No problems until the fan started running on high. She took it by the dealership a few months ago and they told her it could be close to $300 to tell her what was wrong with it. We took it to Autozone and had code checked and light went off for couple of days. I added coolant, changed temp sensor and it seemed to help initially but didn't change anything. Dang light keeps coming on and fan sounds like she is about to take off down the runway. We are taking it to the dealership tomorrow with plans to leave it.
The car is a nice little car with our only complaint being the fan issue. I'm not crazy about the "upcharge" techniques used in the service department but numerous friends/family have told me they go through the same thing with Ford and Dodge. Our 2nd visit for a oil change was not pleasant when the service fellow told me they needed to take motor apart and clean fuel injectors with some outrageous cost. When I asked how a new car needed that kind of repair so soon he backtracked, the full waiting room probably played a role in that. Each visit after that has been pleasant. I emailed a complaint after the 2nd visit and have also sent an email saying how pleasant the service was on subsequent visits. I never was acknowledged so I quit giving them my feedback.
Hopefully we have a pleasant visit tomorrow!

So Saturday we dropped off the Cruze. I told the parts guy the fan is running on high and check engine light is on. He says no problem we will do a diagnostic and let you know what is wrong. I informed him that this is a common problem (figured he already knew so that is why he blew off my comment). He called later and said it was going to be $317 for a new blower control board. I asked if he was sure it wasn't a thermostat or water pump and he said nope, just have to wait few days for the part to come in on Monday/Tuesday. Yesterday we were hit with snow/sleet and the part wasn't there in the morning. No problem, we sort of accounted for the weather and figured we could be delayed day or two.
They call my wife today and picked her up from work (nice) so she could get her "ready to go car". After paying dang near $400 (we also did a oil change and tire rotation with a $29 coupon.....$317+29=dang near $400) my dear wife gets in her car and starts it up. Yep, starts doing the same thing!!!! She says something to the service department folks and they tell her no one ever said anything about a check engine light or fan. After they look at the order they say it did have something about fan after all but they don't know anything about a check engine light.
My wife asked to see the General Manager and she was told that she could not see him without talking to the service manager first. Fine, she asked where he was and it is the same guy that we have been dealing with all along! Nice gig, block a customer from filing a complaint with the gm because the complaint is about you.
Now they have taken the car back and said they will fix it. Really, after you scammed us out of close to $400 and now you are going to fix it? My wife has a loaner car to get back to work, let's see what happens from here.

Just got a call. They changed thermostat and it is fixed. I asked about needless part and cost associated with it and was informed that it was my fault for not being clearer on what was wrong but I needed a new blower control board anyways. "Check engine light and fan running at jet speed" was not clear enough. Never again!

Did you have problems inside the car with the blower motor switch?
No problems with the switch.
I met with the Service Manager yesterday. The guy that wrote up the original repair put down that the blower motor only works on high so they replaced a "blower control module ((#13349361)". The tech that worked on the car even made a note on the order referencing the fan running on high and it would need repair (I didn't see it but that is what I was told).
When we took the car in I specifically mentioned the problem (you can hear it from a mile away) and told him that was probably causing the check engine light. I also mentioned this message board and the likelihood of the issue being a thermostat or sensor. He basically blew us off so I told my wife that the problem is so widespread he already knew what the issue was. The coupons we had were supposedly not good for the oil change/tire rotating that we had done but they gave my wife a $15 credit anyways. After the credit we paid around $65 for that stuff. I told the Manager that they should have looked at the coupons Saturday when I offered them instead of telling me they didn't need to see them. That way I could have taken it elsewhere to get the oil change done.
The Service Manager said he thought we should get a full refund for the part and labor that we did not need. I voiced my complaint concerning poor customer service and he seemed genuinely concerned. As a customer I hate to be treated as a inconvenience. Hopefully things will be fine from here on out!
Hi, same as everybody else, i have the p0597 code and fan runs at a Very high pitch! I have 63,000 miles but problems been there a while. Its a 2011 Cruze and if there is a recall or a service dept. That would help me that be great. Seems like a common problem on here. Other than that its been a solid car. Any help would be great.
Wow, I'm stunned to see so many people with this issue, that I have.
I just bought this car from my local dealer(Galaxy Motors) (car is under 50,000kms) and a little while ago, like others have stated, the check engine light has come up, and the fan is running HIGH all the time.. I work in the security business and have little spare time to get my car in. Reason I'm now posting and trying to find info on how to resolve this very annoying running fan issue. The car has had no problems since I purchased it, and have come to really enjoy the car, till well now with the fan issue.
Is chev dealing with this issue, that seems to be a none rare issue? Figure with this many responses there would be a recall notice in my mail box.
Any help would be great!

BCGUY: I had this same problem, I have a post on this forum about how I got it fixed. Chevy knows this is a very common problem, but I'm sure they are playing dumb about. The dealer should fix it free of charge. The thermostat unit is covered under your poweertrain warranty. Don't let them tell you any different.

I have a 2012 Cruze at 40k miles. Just after my warranty expired my engine light came on with a code of P0957 thermostat stuck open. Took it to orielys coded and cleared the code. Now the fan is running at very loud and fast rate. I have tried calling Jim Butler Chevrolet in Fenton MO where I bought the car about warranty info with no response when I was told I would receive a call back (2 weeks ago), I also have tried Steve Schmidt in Highland IL where I live, with a response that they are "too booked up with recalls to do any repair service" This BS I have owned 6 GM vehicles and finally I get a new car, only to have problems that is obviously a known problem and these dealers and chevy won't even try to address the issue. I swear next car I buy Ford will get my hard earned money.
