Unhappy Power Steering / engine shuts off

I have a 2006 Chevy Equinox. The vehicle will not start at times other times you can get it to start but have no power steering. It makes a clicking noise and if you re position the steering wheel with the lever it will correct itself - after a while. With all the recalls with power steering I am very nervous about letting my son drive this thing. I have brought it to my mechanic several times and he said he would have to take the entire thing apart etc. Anyone have this same issue???

Default 2008 equinox Same issue

I've had my equinox since new. 2024 now and I'm have a random click noise sounds like behind the steering wheel or gauges.
It does it once a day almost. When it happens and I'm driving the whole power steering turns off but only when turning. It is a little scary. For how I only drive it to work. Not sure what can be done at this point but wait for what ever part to fail completely.
Mechanics won't mess with it until something is actually broken. The power steering motor has never been changed.
The vehicle runs very good only 104000 miles.
Does Chevrolet know how to fix this? Should some parts be changed?

Default Update on losing power steering intermittently

I found in my case my battery terminal had burnt grease inside the ring. I cleaned both terminal and posts. Now the battery connection should be making good contact.
So far one weekend I have not heard clock nose. I suspect it was battery reconnecting contact as it vibrates.
I'll drive it a few weeks and really find out.
Note: when power steering disconnected it would only be for 1 or 2 seconds.

Start by replacing your mechanic.
