My 2008 equinox LT -180k Kim’s has suddenly started rattling. The whole cabin/steering shakes at a speed 45kmph and stops ~50 kmph, after that the car handles well at other speeds and there is No check engine light.

Could someone point me In The right direction for a fix.

 

FWD or AWD?

Inspect the tires for bulges or damage. Have the wheels balanced.

 

It’s an AWD.

 

try to manually shift it to whatever gear its in at those speeds and see if you go to 55/60kmph. if you still feel it then it might be in the trans.

 

AWD means it'll have some kind of rear driveshaft. Those usually have universal joints which can go bad and vibrate. Possibly the rear drive axle too. I'm not familiar with the Equinox drivetrain unfortunately, but I would eliminate the wheels as a cause first.

You could try putting the transmission in neutral when you start feeling the vibration and see if it goes away. (obviously don't do this in a busy area)

 

This afternoon I got the wheels balanced and rotated. A few days before I heard a whining noise which got louder as speed increased.. The mechanic identified that as left front wheel bearing failure which he fixed.

However the vibration still remains. It is excessive between 45-60 kmph and goes away above and below this speed range.

 

It turns out the problem was the driveshaft bearing. With time the vibration got more heavy- only between ~40-50. A couple of days back heard a violent noise under the floor between the driver/ passenger seat.

the mechanic tried but could not take out the driveshaft from the engine side and finally cut it off.

Now I’m driving a 2WD. No issues to report.
