i take the car for a quick drive and all of a sudden the car turns off and wont start.i put some gas in the carb and it starts right up..is it the fuel pump? sticking float on carb..not sure what to try first,,thank you

 

could be the fuel pump or float level ,did you try looking down the carb when it shut's off and try to operate the throttle to see if any gay come's out ? no take thegas line off put it in a can , have some one turn it over to see if any gas come's out to speak of .if does pull the carb and take a look inside .check the float level

i put a new fuel pump and it still doesnt get any gas to carb..i took the line from the fuel pump leading to gas tank took off gas tank fuel cap ..blew in the line and it seems empty..gas guage says 1/2 a tank. shouldnt i hear gurgling in the gas tank.

 

hi guy ,i guess you used an air hose ,just air came out of the gas line .even though the gauge say's 1/2 tank domp 4 or 5 gallon's in and try it again .if you have a engine mounted fuel pump you should not have a sock filter on the fuel line pickup to get pluged .i take it you drive this car all the time and it has not been sitting for 5 or 10 year's to have the gas gell ap to rosen and plug the pickup tube .the sending unit could be bad in the tank . good luck !

 

thank you old dog..i put a new fuel pump and nothing..put in 5 gls more gas and the gas guage went up.
theres two lines coming from the gas tank..one to the fuel pump and the other to a canister thing with a fuel inlet and a line that goes to the middle of the carb. i also pulled the line from gas tank and blew them out.
still no gas going to fuel line by carb..seems like theres no fuel pressure..im stumped. (scratches bald head0

 

well if you take the line off the fuel pump use a shop towel around the air hose nozzel ,blow air into the tank you should be able to force gas out of the line . the extra line is a vapor return line .if no gas yet take a small 1 or 2 gallion gas can and tap right into the fuel pump line (use a short hose )with a ****** hose fitting into the pump ,and see if it will run .if not the new pump is bad ,if it will either then the fuel line from the tank is pluged .disconnect it on both ends then blow air through it .if it come's throughyou will have to drop the tank and take the sending unit out .

 

Check the gas cap.
Remove the gas cap .... if it starts then replace the cap.
