Dropping a rebuilt '69 Chevelle 350 5.7L 4-barrel in my '78 Suburban and I'd like to know if it is indeed better to use ATF instead of actual power steering fluid since it is an older model vehicle.
What are you asking? If you should use ATF in the power steering pump?
I remember that myself with older GM vehicles, but I would imagine in this case, it depends on if the new or remanufactured power steering pump is made to the old specs, or modern specs. Using ATF in a newer vehicle's power steering system could lead to seal failures or possible pump damage.

Yes, you should use ATF in that pump. Dexron II or III is the correct fluid for your '98 Chevy's power steering. It's what GM specified from the factory. Using power steering fluid instead can cause noise and performance issues.
It appears to be the original pump from 1979, judging by the look of it. I'm no expert by any means though, so I've included photos to be on the safe side. And if it is original, would using Dex be a negative? Should I ONLY use ATF? Not sure what the previous owner(s) used.
