Default front differentail help

i have a 90 z71 the 4wd never worked then i shoved a rod in were the actuator goes and it dont seem to push far enough.. it wont lock in..you can feel it kinda grab just wont go all the way..so i took it out and put it in 4wd wouldnt kick in so drove a while the the front end started making a howling noise and i stopped the truck then the differential made a clunk noise and 4wd worked but soon as i took it out it wont work again the light is on on the floor saying it is in 4wd what is wrong with the differential
i hooked up the actuator up toggle switch and i no for sure the actuator pushes out but my differential dont seem to be locking i know for sure the t case works to it is something internal in differential.. could the actuator be weak???

Are all 4 tires the same size? Are the gears behind the actuator sliding freely?
