Default how do i bleed the cooling system?

i get heat then no heat, the engine overheats then i put the heat on it drops a bit . i changed the stat,didnt help, with the heat off i open the little brass screw on the black pipe by the water pumpand i get steam , put the heater on i get antifreeze,pop the top on resevoir it gurgles and over flows. i no its full of air but how do i get rid of it all?? ive been at this for days. ( 97 3.1 malibu ) thanks.

are you sure you put the stat in the right way
sounds like it might be upside down

spring towards the engine,it cant go any other way ,the housing you take off is way to shallow. i changed engines and the car sat for a day with no engine in it ,im 99% sure it just full of air. thanks anyway.

if anyones interested,ijacked up the passenger front were the resivior is and rev it up to 2000 rpms with the heat on ,after about 30 secs the resivior spilled over let out a gurrgle (burp). i filled it back up and now alls well,lots of heat and temp needle stays right around the middle.
