2 things, the linkage may have come out of adjustment or there is a mechanical problem with the transmission. Get under the car and check where the linkage connects to the shifter arm going into the transmission. They use a lot of plastic tabs now and have been having problems with them breaking.

05 Monte Carlo is a front wheel drive car, basically a 2 door Impala. The shift linkage is in the engine area in the area directly below the wiper motor or master cylinder.

It goes in every other gear, but the shifter will not go into park. My friend adjusted some kind of black line under the hood, and was able to get the shifter into park, but then they key would not come out of the ignition, and some of the other gears would not work. He said he thinks its something wrong in the shifter or the area around the shifter? But he's not sure exactly what?

He threw the cable out of adjustment. That's why the other gears stopped working. You might be able to get it to the correct point to get everything to work. Since it quit working on its own, there is probably a problem with the cable or the transmission.
