what grease should i use to grease the slip yoke splines?..does it matter?...i dont want to eat the rear seal away and get into the case and fluid.

Why do you want to grease it? Is it getting stuck?

 

You shouldn't need to grease them at all.

The part of the Sleeve of the Yoke, and the Spline Gear of the Yoke and Transmission, are exposed to the Automatic Transmission Fluid or Gear Lube. There's no actual pump that furnishes the Oil back to them, but there's usually a sufficient amount of it available, to keep things Lubed up sufficiently. That's why there is an Oil Seal there. In fact, the introduction of another kind of Lubricant into the Transmission, could cause contamination, and cause you problems in the long run.

 

the reason i need to grease it is that i have that "clunk" whn i go from P>D or P>R and if i hit the gas rather than easing into it slowly. ive looked up the cause and it looks to be that the splines on the slip yoke and ouput shaft are slamming together. the temp fix for it is to grease the shaft and yoke to add a cushion between the splines. the FIX if a nickel plated slip yoke.. i cannot however find anything out there that says what type of grease would be best for this. its on a 05 1500 btw....thankyou

 

Any grease will work just may not last long. You can get the grease that the dealer sells to lube the steering shaft. It comes in a white siringe

 

et, why don't you try just replacing the Yoke with an OEM first, and pour some ATF in and on it before pushing it in. That oughta help a lot, and if you'll tell me what kind of ATF you're using, I'll see if I can find a heavy grease, which is reasonably compatible with it.

 

the OEM is a upgrade to the nickel plated version. i have yet to find one online so, as much as i hate to, i assume its a GM part. which means im gonna have to wait till after christmas to get it so that ill still be able to buiy presents for my kids...idk what fluid is in there now. its at 88k so its time to change it and that IS on the list so whe i do ill prolly go to an amsoil product.
