Question front end noise

Our HHR has slowly developed a strange front suspension noise. Sounds like possible wheel bearing however on a hoist running in gear sounds more like in transaxle. faster the speed, the noisier in all gears (MANUAL TRANS). not running all seems to be tight, no shaking or wiggling, no hand movement. on the road it sounds like driver front. Been a Auto Mech since the 50s, hate to tear it apart till I get more info on possible probs. Thanx in advance, any help will be appreciated. Was the Father in laws, his passing left it to my wife. He bought it new on OK. 98K miles.

does the noise change as the vehicle is swayed left and right to load and unload the wheel bearings?

its a lot of work; that model has small stubs shafts that join the axle shafts and transaxle... you could remove the cv shafts...leaving the stub shaft in the transmission and then run on hoist. if it is the transaxle....axles are out for the randr
