most likely it is a change oil icon.......the change oil icon looks like a gravy saucer with a drip coming out of it in Canada anyhow, in the US it just says change oil.....

surv mode. may be what the Police edition Impalas get-
Surveilance Mode.

meaning that you press it and all the lights are blacked out, I think even the cluster goes dark.
it does no good to be in surveilance mode and have interior lights and exterior lights on.

youre never going to get into overdrive in the city.
Unless youre going about 40-50 or something like that for a certain amount of time- thats when you see the needle drop into overdrive.
This is how it would perform.
You get on highway. accelerate, and your speed increases, as you reach lets say 60 MPH, you tachometer is probably showing 2000 RPM's. or so.... if you continue at your present speed with no change, you will see the car go into overdrive, you can feel and see the tach drop about 400 or 500 RPMs. it is now in overdrive. to get out of overdrive you can do 2 things- you can step in the gas pedal about halfway- this increases the speed of the car- but also makes the car shift out of overdrive and into 3rd.... OR you can manually shift the lever to 3- essentially forcing the tranny to use 3rd gear. you immidiately see the RPM's go up about 500 RPM's. you can also feel that the car/engine respond a little better because its now in 3rd and revving higher.
You can safely travel in 3rd gear. though it will USE more gas since the engine is revving higher.
the purpose of overdrive is to get the engine RPM's down, and thus save fuel, the drawback is that when you step on the gas the car doesnt respond as quickly .
(in my 2003 trailblazer, whenever im in tight situations on the highway- like making lane changes in congested lanes- I shift into 3rd- so that I have a much better response from the engine, tranny, vehicle).
in your case, have you tried manually shifting from 1st, to 2nd to 3rd and overdrive?
read your manual.... I believe it has the MPH range that each gear can be safely operated in.
