Can't get new timing chain to fit. 2.4l LAT Ecotec Engine, 2009:Chevy Malibu Hybrid.
2009 Chevy Malibu Hybrid made in Canada. LAT engine that has the spring style drive belt tensioner.
The Fixed timing chain guide disintegrated and the car would no longer start. Upper and lower bolts of chain guide pulled out and were broken and chewed up. ~2" diameter Washer-looking destroyed part found in oil pan with partial PN GM 5535..... Have no idea where that came from...
Bought a timing chain replacement kit from rock auto. Crank Sprocket in kit was not the same as original. Bought repair manual for 2009 Hybrid Malibu.
Timing chain that came with kit is about 1 to 1/2 link shorter than original. Figured original probably stretched but no matter what I do, the new timing chain will not fit. It's a little too short to get around the Crank Sprocket with the chain around the two cam sprockets and the adjustable chain guide installed. The YouTube videos show that there is plenty of slack to get the chain around the crank sprocket. WTF.
If I leave the adjustable chain guide out, I can get the new chain installed but no way of getting the guide installed. I confirmed that the original chain still fits.
I took both chains to NAPA. The chain they said should fit a 2009 Chevy Malibu hybrid was the same length as the one from RockAuto.
Any ideas on what might be going on? Any help is appreciated. It's my daughter s car and she can't afford anything else.
All the best!
