Safe Mode after Oil Change?

I don't put it in the "taken advantage" category. If I remember correctly, the catalytic converter is integrated into the exhaust manifold on the 2.2L ECOTEC. Seeing how the part is rather expensive and in short supply to boot and, in order to do the job right, you also have to make sure any debris didn't ruin the exhaust valves, a grand isn't out of the question, including the time spent for diagnostics. The cost would be an issue if that wasn't the problem.

My '07 Malibu has 53000 on it and I was having a vibration sound in the engine and they said it was the cat. so they replaced the whole exhaust. turns out that wasn't the sound I was hearing but they said the cat. was coming apart. I previously owned a 1994 Chevy Lumina and had 145000 on it and never had an exhaust issue of any kind. Kinda seems to me they are fixing things that aren't broke. Why can't we focus on problem areas and not bother things that work great.
