Default Parking brake cable adjustment

Vehicle: Chevy S10 2.2L

My parking (emergency) brake front cable broke. I've installed a new one, but having trouble connecting it to the rear cable. The equalizer nut (adjustment nut) on the rear cable is rusted in place. I've sprayed the nut with PB Blaster several times. Would it have killed Chevrolet to make this nut and threaded stud out ofstainless steel, to prevent rusting?

Also the threaded stud does not have a hex or allen key. Insteadit's asquare profile. I can't even get a wrench on it, just pliers, which, of course slip, because the nut is rusted/fused in place.

Has anyone else had these problems with the equalizer (adjustment) nut?

Thanks. --Manor

Here's a photo that summarizes the problem.

I would suggest a pair of vice grips.... get them as tight as possible to get the most "bite" and then try to break it loose. In the mean time im going to take a look at my S10 and see if i can think or another way to get that off.

Edit: After looking at my S10 that looks to be about a 6mm or 6.5mm shaft(The smallest Wrench i have is a 7mm) but from the looks of yours it would be impossible to get a wrench on that as it is now. Now that could be a Standard size (This truck is half standard half metric) but i don't have anything smaller than a 5/16 wrench.... Again I would try a pair of vice grips and get them as tight as humanly possible see if that would provide you with enough leverage to get that loose.

Has anyone else had these problems with the equalizer (adjustment) nut?

Yes, my parking brake cable equilizer is also rusted frozen. I used penetrating blaster, let it soak in, used a torch on the nut, used more blaster, and it still won't turn. I used vice grip pliers and a wrench, and I turned it with so much force that the threaded rod was twisting. I had to order a new part and have it shipped to me, because nobody has these at the local NAPA and Advance Auto Parts stores.
