Default Bad oil pump?

I have a 05 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD with 50K miles. I had the oil changed on Saturday and this morning while driving to work the oil pressure went down to zero and the engine started making a "knocking" sound. I had it towed back to the place where they changed the oil and the mechanic there told me that he's 100% sure it's the oil pump. He also said that this is a common problem for these engines and the at he has replaced quite a bit of them. He told me he would have to replace the oil pump and the lifters. Has anybody had an issue with these oil pumps? Is it a common problem? I would appreciate any feedback thanks.

Hey, Dodgefan175,

Welcome to the Chevy Forums.(I'm a closet Dodge fan myself, shhh, don't tell anybody!)

Not noticing a lot of oil pump low mileage failures on this site, my 04-2500HD has 80K and the oil pump is working fine...

50k for a oil pump unheard off. I have never had to replace a oil pump with a low mileage engine and very rarely on a high mileage engine. Most of the time when it starts knocking the engine is done. Never ever had to do one on a 5.3 and I work at a very busy shop www.goss-garage.com. Maybe they have forgot to put oil in that many trucks. I would have it towed to another shop and have them remove the oil filter, there should be oil in it and it should not be perfectly clear (like new oil). Something is very fishy here.

Took it to another shop and they tell me there that it is definitely the oil pump. But there no way to prove the service shop did anything wrong.

I second that. 50k way to early for pump failure. Unless maybe you have only changed to oil a few times since it was new and the lack of oil pressure is from bearing failure.
