how do i know what horse power my 8.1 has
i have an 02 2500hd. its got the 8.1 liter. from what i have heared this engine can be rated from 240 horse and 350 torque to 300 or more hose and 455 torque. is there any way other than a dyno to know what rating i have
the 07 classic 8.1 lt motors wererated with :
330hp@ 420rpm
450LBft trq @3200rpm
so i cant imagine that an 02 would be to far from that "factory"
the 8.1 with the allison is a bad SOB. my friends 03 gets better mpg (with a sh*tload more power) than my 5.3 go figure.
hope this helps.

ZX: do you know those numbers for sure?
i cant imagine that GM would have reduced power for the 07 classic models but then again they do some weird things sometimes.

Those numbers are accurate.
Many times a particular engine's power ratings will differ from one year to another, in many cases there may not even be any difference at all in the actual performance; the variations in the figures are sometimes due to changes in the exact method of obtaining the rating.

thank you, i was just curious. this truck will out pull my old power stroke any day so i was just wondering what mine would be rated at. oh and i know the 8.1 has been known for burning oil. is approx. 1/4 of a quart of oil good bad or ok in about 1300 miles since i changed the oil.
