i did find a set of brandnew 4:88 gears for front in rear for 10 bolt with everything thats needed for the installation (bearings/seals/shims/ring bolts)..guy was going to put them in his 99 half ton.. $200 and i found a guy that will do it cheap.. what do you think of that?

i would make sure they fit for sure, then make sure this guy knows what he's doin, get his rates in writing. 4.88's tho are not highway friendly at all. you will lose quite a bit of mileage.

4.88s would be great if you were to put 35s on. I think a V-6 would be able to push 35s with that low of a gear. But you'd have to start thinking 6 inch lift, and rims and tires. Expensive fast. But 4.88s with stock tires. You'd be able to beat a few v-8s off the line for sure.

okay so i know weve talked a little about this, but why wont a 88-98 rear end work? just because of the drum brakes?

It would work. I'm not sure how much it will screw your brakes up. I've never gone from discs to drum. If you have ABS, I'm not sure the drum brakes will work, not sure if they have sensors.
