Im doing a u-joint for a friend in a couple of days and need some help...

I am mechanicially inclined so I just need some info

Its a 2001 2500 sil. needs a rear u-joint, If some one could tell me what specific tools and instuctions i need, it would be greatly apprecated.

Also if there any tips or tricks that I might need to know...

no telling what tool's you have but a torch ,a press would be nice Big vise or heavy steel bench to drive against ,a bmfh a good drift punch

 

If it is the stock plastic injected U joints you will definatley need a torch.

 

regular hand tools, a big hammer, a torch, and a bit of time and patience. They don't come out easy. You will probably give up several times out of anger before you get it out. Just beat the hell out of it

 

the 2 ways ive done it, 1st and, better way, put the u-joint in a vice with a socket against the cap, then squeeze the vice. itll pop out, a lil heat with the torch would help im sure. the other way i did it was on the side of I-10 in louisiana in my last truck, a ford by the way. was hopin to make it to h-town newho, i had a c-clamp my tailgate and a big hammer and was able to punch 'em out that way, not recomennded, the c-clamp was useless when i was done.

Will a handheld torch melt plastic retainer?

I just did mine and yes a hand held will work but use MAP gas as it gets lots hotter, and you will need to heat the yoke up until you see it purge some of the nylon out of the injection hole...
then press or pound out the joint
