Tis the case in the entire automotive world...........

I have noticed that some identically equipped vehicles just run better than others.

You guys don't need to sweat the 6-speed, it does not offer better mpg, about the only thing that you'll notice is more seamless shifts between gears, the 6-speed keeps the ratio's between each gear closer together, top gear is a nearly identical ratio to the current 4-speed.

The big change for next year is the 2008 Tahoe 2-mode Hybrid, it's been getting about 5 more actual mpg's in tests and it also incorporates a new (more powerful) engine, transmission and some other goodies not yet discussed, when you see (and drive one) you'll want it, guaranteed!

Gotta keep on changing things so you old boys will keep parting with all your hard earned money, if you don’t drop it on new rigs, you’ll just blow it at Cabella’s.

And although I've covered this a dozen times on this forum, the 4.10 ratio actually gets better overall mpg than the 3.73 or 3.42 during 90% of driving conditions, the Vortec 5.3L engine is a little happier operating at higher RPM's than engines of the past, the difference in RPM's in top gear is only about 180 RPM's per each ratio jump.
You'll notice that the EPA rating on the window sticker does not change based on the gear ratio of the unit.

Zx,

Wondering if you could also get the codes if I sent you the VIN for my vehicle. Thanks

DarkOne.

By the way good info that you send to the topics. Thanks.

You bet, just PM me with your VIN and e-mail address so that I can send you back a Word .doc attachment.

Dave

So the 3.42 gearing is going to get the worst mileage? Why offer this on such a vehicle? Why not just either have the 3.73, or the 4.10?

Because most consumers and a few engineers just don't get it.

Dave,
If you are sure i wouldnt get worse gas mileage with 4:10's i actually would rather have them. Are there 4:10's available out there yet? What all would be entailed in having gears switched out? New speedo gear, new 4:10's, labor, computer programming? Cost? Thanks.

I had some 3:73 gears put in my 89 mustang gt convt a while back and I believe i picked the gears up used for around $50, new speedo gear for $10, and labor was around $100?

I am sure the tahoe will be much more, however i would like to know what all I would need and the costs?

It is cost prohibitive generally, especially if you have a 4X4, probably not worth it unless you are towing more then your gears are rated.

Check with your local shop and see what they want, I don't know what the going rate for the gear swap would be, but you would need to obtain a new VCI calibration # from TechAssist when the job is complete.

The difference in performance and economy between these gear sets is minimal so don't get too excited.

What about going from the 3.42 gears to the 3.73 gears, would there be a noticeable difference?
