My 08 burb will shift in and out of gears fine. When I put it in park, the light doesn't move to P. The doors don't unlock by themselves. There seems to be some play in the P position. The shifter has the plus and minus buttons and the electronic switch for trailer mode. Does this sound like a cable issue or something else. I've seen pics of the handle being removed but am not sure that is the problem. What is the part that connects to the gear shifter called?

Most things that USED to use manual cables have been replaced with "Fly-By-Wire" electrical controls. That goes for automatic transmissions and transfer cases, to your entire body and climate control box.
