Hi, when I stop my Tahoe there is a poping noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. Then when I start moving again the same noise happens and it feels like the rear end slips back a few inches and then bumps to a stop. No noise while driving. Any ideas?

 

Sounds like a bad u-joint on the drive shaft or a pinion bearing. Any vibration out of it when you are driving?

 

I'm with MudManiac on the U-joints. I had a 01 Ford that only made noise starting or stopping, turned out to be U-joints, I had the great oppurtunity to change them on the side of I-10 in Louisiana.

 

I just had the rear end rebuilt so I know it isn't in that. Plus it was making the noise prior to having that done. I also just replaced U-Joints and that didn't fix it either. It sounds and feels like the entire rear end is moving back and forth and then thumping to a stop. Thanks for the thoughts.

 

Oh and to answer MudManiac it does not make a sound or vibrate when driving no matter the speed. When I had the U-joint go out a few times I've heard the noise at low speeds they make. It doesn't sound like that rattle at all.

 

Check all the bolts on the rear end. u-bolts, shackles, leaf springs. Have you replaced the fluid yet in the rear end since you just had it rebuilt?

 

I have a 97 2wd LT 4dr Tahoe w/towing package. my truck has made this noise since my farther purchased it at 34,000 miles. three dealers have looked at it and one stated it was produced with the max tolerance levels. another way of saying I have no idea I think. If I come to a stop and apply break hard or forcefully it will make a noise and when I take off/release the foot brake it makes the noise. Now if I stop slowly and gradually no noise stopping or starting. Rear end has been checked and greased 3x, U joints replaced, brakes checked for sticking, shoes /drums replaced, shocks replaced and transmission replaced. nothing has effected the noise at all.

Truck now has 175,000 miles on it and still makes the same noise no worse no better. I have learned ti live with it just waiting for something to break!

Can you describe the noise?

 

It is a simple clunk noise my thought was a break was sticking and then releases can not feel it just hear it.

 

It's the rear end unloading after accelerating then braking. Race cars use a Pinion snubber to keep the loading to a minimum, nothing wrong........just drive it. All the work from previous posts have not changed it, it won't. JMHO.
