Red face 2005 Tahoe Z71 4x4

It's a snow filled day in Alaska! I headed off to work with my auto 4wd on so it would kick in if I slipped around any. I noticed my auto button and 2wd button on the dash were lit up but not my 4 high and 4 low. (Not the red light, those work just fine, I mean the labeling.) I drove all last winter just fine in 4 high and auto 4 but this morning when I reached a difficult unplowed road I slipped her from auto to 4 high. She slipped around much like still being in 2wd. Can anyone tell me if these two lights went out on your dash before? I don't have the red warning light telling me to check my 4x4 so I'm wondering if maybe I just got caught in a bad spot. I don't remember from last year if those two buttons lit up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My husband and I are expecting a youngin soon so I want to fix whatever we can on our own to save a bit of $$ and have me driving safely!
