Thanks for the heads up, but I am aware of the door handle issue and the dealer did graciously offer to fix that problem while I was there. That is why I do not hold the dealership responsible, I think they were trying as best they could to be helpful. I am just really wanting to see GM step up to the plate and correct the dash issue.

Jeez, Hank...what is it about your Tahoe that is making General Motors turn its back on you like this??? Salvage title? 300,000 miles? It shouldn't matter if you bought it brand-spankin'-new right from GM's loading dock or third-hand from Honest Al's Storm Doors & Used Cars. They need customers willing to be repeat buyers if they want to avoid another bankruptcy. And no bailout next time.

A couple of pages ago in this thread you advised me to stick to my guns. I did. When my District Specialist told me that a $500 deductible was the best he could do, I did an end run around him to see if someone higher up could do better. My service file at my dealer was on the thin side, so I had them do some work that needed to be done anyway, praised them in a GM survey, and built a rapport with them. I finally asked my service manager for his help with the dash issue. He was given authorization to cut my deductible in half--reasonable considering I bought my Suburban used, it wasn't Certified Pre-Owned from a Chevrolet dealer, and the miles were on the high side. The whole process took a couple of months, but it was worth it. And here's the most satisfying part of all this:

That authorization came from someone at Renaissance Center in Detroit. General Motors' Corporate HQ. And I received three phone calls afterward asking if everything had gone well.

So now let me try to return the advice favor. Start fresh with another dealer. Have some other work done. Buy the service manager a four-dollar cup of coffee from Starbucks and make him your friend and ally--he has easy access to people much higher up the ladder than your customer service rep or district specialist. Once you're in "good customer" status, that's the time to ask him to look into re-opening your case.

I kept myself from going completely pissed-off-crazy with the whole issue by treating it like a game of "Survivor."

Outwit...outplay...outlast.

I just joined and am looking at purchasing a full size pickup truck. I'm deciding between the GM Silverado (which shares the dash with the tahoe/suburban) and the Ford F150.

All makes have their problems. I am thankful to Hank and others who have posted their problems here. Some have been resolved and others have more difficulties.

What I can't get over is how GM is still producing these defective/cracking dashes today in 2012 since as early as 2007. It just strikes me as complete lunacy to keep making the same mistake over and over for 5 years. Same thing about the door handles which cut people. I know the dash and the door handles aren't the most important items on a truck....but still....these are $40-50k vehicles which are not the cheapo bargain bin vehicles.

GM should stand behind their product and should 1) replace the dash for cracks and peeling door handles for free; and 2) stop making defective dash and door handles.

I'm sure the Silverado/Suburban/Tahoe have many great qualities. Unfortunately, I have NO faith that GM will do the right thing. Frankly, GM should be apologizing like crazy for the inconvenience (for selling a defective dash) and replacing the dashboards for FREE instead of charging people.

I've read about some F150 owners having problems but not nearly the same consistency/frequency as the cracking dash issue. Ford does make running changes when they discover problems and so does Lexus (my other car).

As much as I'd like to consider a Silverado (because it seems like a promising vehicle), my choice to go with the Ford F150 is very easy!

So much for service after the sale right???
you are making a good decision about the Ford, as they will fix safety and service problems, I had a 01 Sporttrac FORD put new leather seat covers on after 75,000 miles because they were peeling no charge. Also replaced lug cover on one of the wheels THAT I LOST no charge. I knew better. But I will continue to post an let others know about this dash issue.

I have joined the ranks of the frustrated. GM has offered me 20% towards replacing my cracked dash. To me, a long standing customer of GM, I am finally done. My dash cracked just like everyone elses, through absolutely no effort on my part. I bought mine brand new and to then be told that yes there is a known problem but I have to absorb the cost...... Bottom line, I have always taken my Tahoe, and all of my GM cars to the dealership for service, and trust me I have paid dearly for that.

You win GM, the best you will do is give me 20 percent on an 800 dollar repair, the way I figure it since I can by the dash myself for 320, my cost i am sure not yours, you are still making great money on your bad product. So I will fix it, but in the end I will make sure to educate all that I can on the defects and GM's response. You lost this customer, and if people view what I intend to put out, maybe a few more.

And just on the off chance the people posting on here havent ever looked at the origin of where the crack starts under the dash.... well GM punched a hole to put a clip holder in for the piece of the dash that butts up to the front window. Now that seems brilliant. Guess that is what must be in the bulletin......

Just curious...has anybody who had their dash replaced had a crack appear in the new dash? Or has GM discovered what the issue was and taken steps to prevent it with the new dashes?

UPDATE: I purchased the new dash and installed it myself. The interesting part is that they have in fact significantly altered the design, which I assume will prevent the crack from occurring again. So I spent 6 hours of my time. I have all of it photographed and I am trying to figure out how to post the pictures. I also called back to Chevrolet to discuss this issue, ultimately they said they would do nothing about the issue because they had offered me the 205 off if they did the whole job.... I was not willing to get 20% off of $1400.00. The part can be purchased online for about $320. But beware, it is a great deal of work to swap it out and involves removal of a tremendous amount of accessories and wiring. I am going to continue to press the issue with GM, documents will go out Monday. If someone can tell me how to post the pictures I would be happy to, I think you will immediately see what the new design was done to correct.
