For now take the information that I'm giving you as fact and disregard the other posts. (If this changes I will let you and this entire forum know.) That is the Onstar module GM Part number, and the only other part number is for the Bluetooth antenna. You should not have any problems with ordering the part, so there should be no "convincing". Just go to the parts department, tell them the part number you want, and pay them the money. I think I paid about $240 or $270 for the part. (I don't have the invoice in front of me as I post.)

What dealership did you buy it from? I've tried ordering and was told it was on "national backorder" which i know is just their way of saying "we're not allowed to sell it to you"

I'm in Southern California, Pasadena to be exact. You just have to be persistent. When the parts counter tells you it's on "national back-order", you tell them that you know of others that are having no problems with the same order. Secondly maybe ask one of the service advisers if they can order it for you on their own account. One you'll probably get a discount, and two you will get less hassle since the service adviser is the one going in and ordering the part.

I will tell you this, I placed the order on a Monday, and I should have had it basically by Wednesday, Thursday at the latest. That would have been normal. That didn't happen, so I called the parts guy back. He said he had to call GM. It showed that it was "in transit" but he didn't know where the part was. Later on that same day he called me back and said the order was canceled. I was like, "What!!??" There was an explanation though. GM told him that the part is a "(can't remember the nomenclature)" but whatever the word is, it means that GM wants the original part back upon delivery of the new one. So that means new Onstar module comes in, dealership does the install, and they take your old one so they may send it back to GM. (Keep in mind the Onstar module is for all intent and purposes a cell phone.) So at this point to be able to order the part he needed my VIN number and had to resubmit the order. That was the hold up. After that, it took about 2 weeks for the part to come in. My service adviser just let me know 2 hours ago via email that the part is in, and I'm going to stop by tomorrow to pick it up and have them do the install real quick. If their techs are too busy, then I will have my tools with me, and I'll do the swap right in the parking lot of the dealership myself. When I'm done, I'll give them my old module back, while they do the programming. Most of the time is taken just swapping the hardware, the actual programming is done quickly.

Besides that look for my post maybe tomorrow (Friday) evening on using Bluetooth factory style baby!! That is barring no hiccups of course.

You gave them your 2007 VIN? If so I wouldn't be surprised if they have a non-bluetooth module waiting for you. I read of someone else that had that happen.

TMW597,

Were you ever able to to get the correct (Blue Tooth) Onstar module for your 2007?

Man it has been a saga for sure. Even though I'm in California, I found a dealership in Texas that is savvy to GM owners wanting their OnStar with Bluetooth upgrade. One of the online GM parts websites told me that their computers showed that this particular dealership had 2 on their lot so I called them directly. I found out from their warehouse manager that one was for a customer, and the other was for his parts manager. He was cool though and told me if I gave him a VIN from a 2009 he would order the module for me. I got a VIN online from a GM dealer's website, after calling and making sure that it has the option on the window sticker. The order went in on Friday so I should have it by Wednesday. He's going to FedEx it to me via my own account once he receives it. I did the entire order and payment over the phone with my credit card, and just had them fax me the receipt.

Hopefully I'll have something to report by mid-week.

Quick update. So the Onstar Gen 8.1 module (GM part: 20787642) is on the way! I have the FedEx tracking number for it and it should get to me by Monday. (I asked the knuckle-head to FedEx it overnight, giving him my account number, and he still screwed it up somehow and it's coming FedEx ground.) He did confirm it was the correct part number, and begged me to send back the "core" to GM or else they'll charge the dealership $300. Apparently there is a mailing label in the box that goes directly back to GM. I do plan on sending back the "core" since it would only go in a box in the attic anyway.

Can't wait to get the true factory Bluetooth up and running.

TMW597,

Thanks for the update! I'm really excited and hope this thing really works. I really want to get one for myself. Do you know for sure if you'll have to take it to a dealer and have it programmed or is there a chance you can just swap it in and it'll be basically plug n play?

My understanding is that it is plug n' play, but to a point. I believe the Bluetooth portion of it may work right out of the gate, but obviously not the OnStar because OnStar needs to be told what the new VIN is. In my application OnStar is moot, because I don't pay for the service.

I'll give it a try first and see if all of the options show up in the navigation, and in the instrument panel. I will eventually take it to the dealership to get programmed, and then call OnStar so it's all in sync.
