6300 pounds of crap with a 5000 pound towing capacity. NOW WHAT. Suggestions welcome.

Do the 3.73 gearing if your going to be doing a decent amount of towing. You really won't need the trans cooler unless you are planning to lead foot tow all the time. Your trans should be able to cool itself just fine. Also what safety equipment do you have for your trailer? Sway bars? Brake away switch? Snap up chains? I have been towing for years, I have only had one accident and it was when I didn't use my safety equipment. I would strongly suggest that you get a few of these things.

Cameron,
I was thinking the 3:73s as I am going to be doing a lot of spring, summer and fall traveling with the family. I live in the Pacific Northwest so lots of high passes to driver over, so I think the coolers are needed. As for my set up, I have a weight distribution hitch with attached anti sway bars, with snap ups. Yes, the trailer comes with brake away too. I am running the factory class III which is fine with the trailer when using load distributing hitch, but the RV company I bought the trailer from is going to reinforce the factory hitch for me too.
So, i am all set with safety equipment. I am also having TPS added to the trailer.
To get to context of my original post, you're saying the regear sounds pretty reasonable?

UPDATE: Just got a quote to regear from 3:08 to OE sources 3:73 for $2500. Includes the post breakin recheck. That should be a noticeable difference. Anyone know who to calculate the diff in RPMs in 6th gear at 70 mph?

I've towed travel trailers for the best part of 40 years, 35 foot park model and 40 foot, triple axle fifth wheel with GMC Pickups. If I only could do one thing, without a doubt, it would be add a transmission cooler. It's very cheap insurance. When we did most of the towing, we lived in the state of Washington where my wife is from. We traveled from coast to coast to Boston where I am from and we used it for work all over the west. As you know, there are real mountains in the western states, not like the eastern states. If you don't have a cooler and traveling up and down the mountains, it's only a matter of time before you'll be visiting AMMCO.

3.73/3.08 times RPM @ 70 with 3.08
1.211 times RPM @ 70 with 3.08 or about a 20% increase.

You could use a weight distribution hitch, take it slow and easy. Add a tranny cooler or just rent a vehicle that is able to do the job. Just remember if you suffer a accident and they find out you exceeded the weight limits you are screwed...
