Default 94 burb drum brakes question

I have a 94 k2500 suburban and im pretty confused with the rear drums. I appear to have part of a 2 1/2 pad setup and part of a 3 1/2 pad setup. The drums are listed anywhere I go as 3 1/2 pad drums and 3 1/2 pads fit perfectly inside the drums. However it has 2 1/2 pads on the back plate and the larger pads don't fit the back plate at all. Through some other searches on various other forums and such it has left me on the fence as some information just tells me I have miss matched parts. While a few pages have led me to believe as a rare occurance gm actually did it like that from the factory. Also doing these searches has given me 2 conclusions. technically its fine the way it is just as long as everything is in working condition (which it is currently is not as to why im researching this). On the other hand if I want to correct this foolishness I either have to swap axles with a 8lug burb with the proper 2 1/2 drums to match my backplate or change my backplate to the 3 1/2 pad style so I can use pads that match my drums.
