pull door panels off, check all the linkage and linkage bushings. they tend to wear out over time. most of the plastic pieces can be found at most parts stores.

easiest to pick up repair manual. there are screws in the armrest, otherwise panel pulls off, with some pulling. it's held on by plastic, push snap lugs. once all those are pulled loose, push whole panel upwards to release snaps at window channel. you will have to pull electric window/door switch off too. a slight pry should pop it off. hope this helps.

I've taken those door panels of my 1996 alot of times it's really easy once you get them off to see whats wrong. Take your time don't rush because you want to see what is not moving when your removing the panel. start off with the two screws on the handle where you close the door from the inside. The housing around the handle (inside) simply snaps off, but be careful not to break those clips or your housing will never stay flush around your handle again. All around your door panel are little clips.

Follow what maxxman04 is saying also he is taking you down the right path. Once you get the door panel off it's easy to see how the door works. There are two rods one goes to the locking device and the other goes to the outside handle. I do alot of stereo stuff to my truck so I take panels off to play with the speakers alot.

Many heads are better than one.
