Default '98 Tahoe Tranny Question

My '98 Tahoe shifts fine, in 2W, 4Auto, and 4Hi. Last night I put it into 4Lo just to make sure it went into it okay, and it enagages but does not seem to "catch" until 1500 rpms. It seemed to "whine & lurch" quite a bit so I immediately put it back into 2W. I had a '99 Yukon which had the push button 4wd options but quite frankly don't know if I ever even put it into 4Lo so I am not sure if this is correct or not. It seems odd to me since in all other modes the tranny seems to shift fine.

Generally, I know just about enough to be dangerous when working on cars/trucks so all I have done is check the fluid and it seems to be fine. So, I am looking to the experts for some advise...

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, guess I should say hello all. I am new to the forums and look forward to learning a lot from all of you here! I used to own a '99 Yukon (which was a great vehicle - never ANY problems in the 40k miles I drove it), and now have a '98 Tahoe LT 5.7 (higher mileage 166,000 ish and I am thinking will need some fixin' now & then). But, I look forward to many years with it.

Thanks again for any suggestions/tips to the above issue!

Welcome to the forum.

By chance did you check the owner's manual for shifting to 4WD Lo? Doubt that has any effect but never hurts to look.

Yeah, I put it in 4 Lo from a stop (in nuetral) then tried rolling it in from nuetral at 1-3 mph...same results. No problems engaging into 4 Lo - just slipping once it's there.

I guess the jest of my question is, if it works fine in all other gears (2 Hi, 4 Auto, 4 Hi) and the fluid is fine will it hurt to just keep it as is and not use 4 Lo??? I really doubt I'll ever have the need for 4 Lo...

Thanks

That's a good question for a 4WD expert. My guess would be no but that's just a guess.
